About our Lodge

For more than 100 years Totara Country Lodge has been home for one family.

In 2006 the property was purchased by Beth Mackay who lovingly refurbished the historic kauri villa to a high standard, offering guests a stunning family holiday home. With deep respect for history, she has taken care to retain as much as possible of the character and detail of the original pitsawn timber home.

Set on a ridge above the main road, the lodge and gardens afford glimpses of beautiful deepwater Whangaroa Harbour. The gracious old villa is warm and cosy inside, but generously endowed with verandahs for relaxation. From there, the wide sweep of lawn draws you out to the gardens.  Set in such beauty, this holiday home is one you will want to return to again and again, to be able to explore all that Doubtless Bay and Northland has to offer holiday makers.

Set aside from the main homestead is the quaint little Cottage. Once the maid's quarters, this is now a comfortable self-contained  holiday cottage - a retreat amongst the treetops.

Hidden away, yet not isolated, this vacation property is blessed with light and sunshine, and affords visitors and families peace and privacy.

With its gracious accommodation, Totara Country Lodge & Cottage is the ideal base for your Northland holiday, whether it is

  • sharing your time with family and friends
  • game fishing
  • exploring beautiful swimming beaches
  • stunning nature walks
  • majestic kauri forests
  • art and craft, galleries, cafes and fine dining.
"Thank you for our wonderful stay in your gorgeous Lodge.  We just loved every detail and is SO appreciated by us.  It was fabulous to be a part of the whole Lodge experience.  We look forward to revisiting in the future and the possibility of meeting the creator of such a haven".

The Lodge was sold in 2009 to new owners, brothers Richard & Maurice Bush who welcome any comments from guests.
